TOGETHER, WE CAN BE A LOCAL SOLUTION TO THE LOCAL ISSUE OF ABORTION.
The heartbreaking reality: The number of reported abortions in Nebraska has risen.
Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) released tragic 2020 statistics showing a 15 percent increase in the number of abortions over 2019. Of the 2,378 abortions, nearly 73 percent were committed at the facilities located right next door to our EPS centers in Douglas and Sarpy County. Additionally, 62 percent of women who had abortions previously had at least one live birth; and 68 percent of women had abortions in the first five to eight weeks of clinically estimated gestation.
The good news: We can work together to reverse the upward trend.
The 2020 abortion statistics confirm the vital importance of our centers being located next to abortion facilities. The report also reveals three important actions we must take to provide women with alternatives to abortion. We must:
1) increase our budget for marketing and signage to ensure women find us before it’s too late;
2) ensure our services reach mothers who are already parenting and who face financial, emotional, spiritual and/or physical crisis due to an additional pregnancy; and
3) emphasize our transformative Life Services programs, which include professional counseling, educational and growth opportunities, and material assistance for moms and babies most in need of loving, life-affirming support.

AN INSPIRED FUTURE – A STORY OF HOPE
As a young teen, Mia* began a long-term relationship that developed into a tumultuous on-again, off-again coupling involving verbal and emotional abuse. Eight years together and in their early 20s, Mia and her boyfriend faced an unexpected pregnancy amidst their troubled relationship.
Now as Mia sat with EPS nurse, Michelle, she began to sob with confirmation from the ultrasound scan that she was five weeks pregnant. She appeared broken by the news. Not only had she been suffering from the loss of two close family members, but she had also just broken up with the father of the baby after he learned she had two positive home pregnancy tests.
“He called me stupid. He said I would not be a capable mom and that I couldn’t support a kid,” she confided. “He wants me to have an abortion.”
Mia shared that she held Christian values, spoke of her desire to be close to God and uncertainty about what to do. Michelle offered Mia reassurance and talked about the unexpected pregnancy in terms of God’s plan. She explained how His plan for us is mightier than we can often see or understand, especially when we’re experiencing moments of crisis or in turmoil.
After a heartfelt conversation, Michelle and Mia prayed together in the ultrasound room. Mia then spent time with EPS professional counselor, Sue. Mia agreed to meet Sue for another counseling session even though she was still unsure if she would carry her pregnancy to term. She deeply desired to continue working through the anxiety she felt over the loss of her loved ones.
As promised, Mia returned to EPS for several counseling sessions, as well as another ultrasound that concluded she was eight weeks along. After this ultrasound and upon many discussions about her baby and life goals, Mia decided to tell her parents and the parents of the baby’s father that she was expecting. She soon had full support of everyone to carry her pregnancy to term.
Several months after joining our parenting program and continued professional counseling, Mia gave birth to a baby boy. Premature, her son was born with health challenges that Mia had to face without the support of the baby’s father after their relationship ended for good.
To this day, Mia continues to inspire EPS staff with her bravery and all she has accomplished as a single mom. Because she found EPS, staff had the chance to give her time to pause, think through her decision, seek healing through counseling and pursue her educational goals. And with Mia’s ‘yes’ to life, she has taken full responsibility of her son’s care, acquired a degree and landed a fantastic job.
Mia’s son’s life was spared, and her life was transformed forever because she chose EPS in a time of crisis and uncertainty. Mia overcame what she thought were impossible barriers and has found joy in motherhood.
